GEORGIA

About Georgia...

Georgia is a captivating country located at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia, known for its picturesque landscapes, ancient history, and warm hospitality. Nestled between the Caucasus Mountains and the Black Sea, it offers a unique blend of snow-capped peaks, lush valleys, and coastal scenery. With a cultural heritage spanning more than 3,000 years, Georgia is one of the world’s oldest Christian nations, and its traditions are reflected in its distinctive language, unique alphabet, vibrant music, and rich folklore.

The capital city, Tbilisi, is a lively mix of old and new, with winding historic streets, colourful architecture, and modern urban flair. Beyond the capital, visitors can explore the Kakheti wine region—often called the “cradle of wine” due to Georgia’s 8,000-year winemaking tradition; as well as other towns like Kazbegi and Svaneti, where medieval towers and breath-taking alpine scenery define the landscape. The Black Sea city of Batumi adds a modern coastal experience, complete with beaches, gardens, and nightlife.

Georgia is filled with remarkable historic and cultural sites, each offering a glimpse into the country’s ancient past. Kutaisi, one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities, is home to the UNESCO-listed Gelati Monastery and Bagrati Cathedral, both reflecting Georgia’s medieval Golden Age. Akhaltsikhe stands out for the impressive Rabati Castle, a restored fortress complex that blends medieval walls, churches, mosques, and museums in a captivating hilltop setting. Beyond these, sites such as Mtskheta, the former capital and spiritual heart of Georgia, offer iconic religious monuments like Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and Jvari Monastery, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Ancient cave settlements are another highlight: Uplistsikhe, a rock-hewn town carved into cliffs along the Mtkvari River, showcases pre-Christian architecture and early urban planning; while Vardzia, a vast 12th-century cave monastery built under Queen Tamar’s reign, features hidden tunnels, frescoes, and chambers overlooking dramatic mountain valleys.  Additional historic destinations include Dmanisi, where some of Europe’s oldest human remains were discovered, and Signagi, a charming fortified town overlooking the Alazani Valley.

Georgian cuisine is another highlight, celebrated for dishes such as khachapuri, khinkali, shkmeruli, and world-famous qvevri wines. With its rich cultural tapestry, diverse natural beauty, and exceptionally welcoming people, Georgia stands out as an unforgettable destination for travellers seeking both adventure and authenticity.
