Arctic Highlights - Greenland, Iceland & The Faroe Islands

Itinerary

DAY 1: THURSDAY: Arrival into Greenland

Depart with Air Greenland from Copenhagen to Ilulissat via Nuuk. Transfer from the airport to your overnight accommodation.

After checking in, short walk around the town to soak in the atmosphere (unguided). The colourful houses are painted in a rainbow of shades, and the giant icebergs float by in the Disko Bay just outside of town. Ilulissat offers a variety of restaurants and cafés where you can enjoy amazing food – often with a spectacular view.

Overnight in Ilulissat

DAY 2: FRIDAY: Enjoy one of the world's most beautiful vantage points over the ice

Guided tour to the ancient settlement of Sermermiut. The beautiful icebergs of Ilulissat form an enclosure around the abandoned settlement of Sermermiut, which is situated one and a half kilometer south of the city.

The different Inuit cultures have lived here during the last 4000 years, and today you can still find artefacts, which are witness to their presence.

Learn about the life and the customs of the Greenlanders before the arrival of the Europeans as you walk around exploring the ruins and take in the views from the world's most beautiful vantage points over the ice.

On the outskirts of the town, you can see and hear the sled dogs. The dogs are chained, but their puppies roam free. Return to your hotel.

Overnight in Ilulissat

DAY 3: SATURDAY: Boat tour around Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Take a boat tour among the sheer beauty of the huge icebergs, which have broken off from the Jacobshavn Glacier, the most productive glacier in the northern hemisphere. The glacier flows about 30 meters per day. This results in approximately 20 billion tonnes of icebergs being calved off and passing out of the fjord every year.  From the Icefjord, the icebergs float by the town of Ilulissat and continue north before turning south and into the Atlantic Ocean.

Overnight in Ilulissat

DAY 4: SUNDAY: Day at leisure

The following optional excursions can be booked at an additional cost. Prebooking is recommended.

  • Day trip to Eqi Glacier:
The Eqi Sermia Glacier is called the "calving glacier" because ice breaks off from it more frequently than other glaciers. The excursion to the Eqi Sermia glacier gives you the opportunity to get very close to the inland ice and to see the calving phenomenon. The boat stops approx. 500 meters from the glacier so you can watch it from a safe distance.
  • Meet the sled dogs:
On this excursion we invite you to join the feeding of a dog team. You can see, feel, touch, and most of all hear the howling of the hungry dogs. The owner demonstrates the process of harnessing the sled and gives you an insight into the life of a sled dog in Greenland.
  • Ilulissat kayaking:
Paddle in a kayak and witness the overwhelming beauty of icebergs floating from the Ilulissat Icefjord.

Overnight in Ilulissat
